Susan Slesinger – Motion
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630 was a German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer. He built upon the heliocentric model developed by Copernicus. Keppler derived three laws of motion. Sir Isaac Newton later showed that relationships like Kepler’s would apply in the Solar System to a good approximation, as a consequence of his own laws of motion and laws of gravity.
Keppler’s laws of motion are:
- The orbit of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the two foci.
- A line segment joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas during equal intervals of time.
- The square of the orbital period of a planet is proportional to the cube of the semi major axis of its orbit.
Kepplers laws are part of the foundation of modern physics and astronomy.
Motion illustrates Keppler’s first law of motion showing that the planets rotate around the sun in elliptical orbits.
Materials: Hand dyed cotton fabric, commercially printed cotton fabric, cotton batik fabric. Polyester thread. Cotton batting.
Techniques used: Hand dyeing, machine applique, machine embroidery, machine quilting, and machine couching.

Well done, the design is certainly one of motion and the addition of the words create a strong pictorial quilt.

Another different interpretation — and I’ve just learned something new too (Kepler’s Laws, which I’m sure I took in school eons ago…but had long forgotten!) The hand-dyed background has such lovely movement itself, making it just right for this piece.
