Caro Higgs – Nature #3

Birds – Stork

Continuing with the nature I experienced while in the Bardenas and Mallos de Riglos area of Northern Spain.

On leaving the Bardenas national park one day we stopped to photograph an entire field of storks, who were happily feeding, I think they had recently spread manure on the field which appeared rather wet. We have storks around here but I never get close enough to photograph them. I took several photographs but used just one image to create three birds of different sizes.

In my stash of fabric I had the material I have used for a background, I bought it while I was in Canada some years ago and if I remember correctly it was hand dyed in the New Brunswick area. The colours were just right to create a damp muddy field against which the storks stand out. Each bird was constructed with scraps of fabric, mainly silk, and then hand stitched.

  1. Great rendition of the storks, it must have been a lot of work. Funnily enough birds are the theme for my next quilt, so I am studying your close up to get some tips. Cheers

  2. The beautiful background well highlights the perfect and beautiful construction of the storks. Lovely work.

  7. It is very appealing how you dressed your storks in silk feathers. I love them because they are national birds of Lithuania. Beautiful work!

  8. The storks are so lifelike. The stitching for feathers gives wonderful texture and the fabric choice for the background is ideal.

  9. The background works well with your storks and the hand stitching adds great visual texture to your piece. Good job!
