Ann Turley – Flight
Fly Away Home II
Inspiration: From the children’s nursery rhyme, “Lady bird! ladybird! Fly away home, your house is on fire and your children are gone.”
A bit grim, but serves as inspiration nonetheless. The lady bug flies amongst the poppies with wings extended. The insect’s ability to hide her glorious wings under the beautiful shell is quite a feat. In slow motion it looks like origami and never ceases to amaze me. I’ve used commercial fabrics, hand dyed fabrics, fuzzy yarn, and organza. This is the second quilt that I have made in this theme.

The power of ladybirds captured perfectly!
Wow, I’ve never had that close look at ladybird, thank you. It always amazes me how we live in different cultures and speak different languages but our ideas are the same. As a young girl when I saw a ladybird, I used to sing the same song but in my native Lithuanian.
Lovely ladybird in full flight. It is not so often that we see that, most of the time I see them wandering and sitting in the sun.Do not know the song, but when we were kids, we trowed the ladybird up in the sky and asked for good weather… Interesting design and colors.
Clever choice of interpretation for the theme ! I also like the impression of movement in your piece.
I love your ladybird and how you have captured the way that she unfolds her wings. An interesting way to interpret the theme, it made me smile
Great subject choice which has been well interpreted.
It looks beautiful Ann. I love your choice of fabric and wish I could see it in person to appreciate all the texture details, like the transparency of the wings. beautiful.
Beautiful workmanship. The lacework is impressive! Imaginative and abstract but also realistic. Very nice mixture.
I love all the texture and transparency you’ve created with your techniques and choice of fabrics. Beautifully interpreted.
Your lady bird made me smile, it reminds me of my youth. I love the rhythm you created with the fuzzy yarn. Very nice design.
The beauty of a perfectly made ladybird. A nice choice for the theme. Well done.
I can see the ladybird flying towards me. A lot of movement in your quilt. Well done!
Insects are wonderful creatures and your ladybird is no exception. She is lovely and is clearly in a hurry.
