Els Mommers – Time #3
Artist statement: Time #3: DANCER GODS -ECUADOR
The third piece in my Time series is inspired by our trip to Ecuador. VISITING TIME: 1993.
We visited San Antonio de Ibarra where, already since the 19th century, many families have devoted themselves to woodcutting.
In addition to religious figures and modern work, they are also inspired by pre-Colombian spiritual art.
We bought two wooden dancer-gods that are inspired by the sun god. These woodcarvings are my inspiration for this work.
Since I wanted more cohesion in my series I decided that I wanted the design and the colors of this quilt to be a bit more in line with TIME #1: Egypt.
A picture of the figures is traced on stained cotton fabric and lines are sewn by machine.
Painted with two different browns and metallic acrylic paint.
Quilted with the same feather and echo motif as in Egypt #1 and also finished in the same way with rusted fabric for the edges.
The whole process can be seen on: http://kunamola.blogspot.com

Rusted fabric is very effective with your choice of colors. By adding color to the two figurines you’ have’ve given them your own personal touch. Well done !
I like how you are tyring the series together. I know with a square it is hard sometimes to decide on the width of the borders, so I think the same size around would be ideal. I do admire how you put such detail into the woodcut design.
Very beautifully executed work with nice details.
I like that you have chosen to give the woodcarvings vibrant colors and life.
Very interesting and precise work. I love the use of rusty fabric, and as always the background story is very interesting. Beautiful stitching.
Love it! The details are all there and the rust fabric sets it off beautifully. Great work!
The design is great and the rusty background sets off the figures very well. Adding the brighter colours to the figures really gives them dramatic presence.
It is very nice addition to your serries. I love your attention to details, looks like nothing have been missed. Great work!
