Joan Brailsford – Time #3
Time and Trees: Autumn
The trees react as the seasons turn, and in the third in my series we have reached autumn. In the woodland, the leaves change to their rich oranges, yellows and browns, and fall to the ground to form a rich colourful carpet.
I have used a delicate yellow background that is overlaid with a commercial printed cotton, then transfer painted sheer fabric in gentle oranges. The trees are hand dyed cotton, and the carpet of leaves under the trees is made from small hexagons from a selection of commercial printed fabrics in autumn colours. Apart from the outline of tree trunks, all the other details are created by hand stitching – the branches and twigs, the texture of the woodland floor, the falling leaves, and of course the hexagons.
I hope that the whole scene conveys the quiet calm of a woodland scene as the trees continue their relentless journey of change.

The painted sheer fabric gives a subtle note to your piece. I also like the embroideries for the tree branches, in the distance it looks like lace. Beautiful outcome.
The work is wonderful, you can feel the autumn. The embroidery work that represents branches resembles lace and does the job well. I really like the calm color in the work.
Joan I enjoyed your quilt although Autumn can be dreary you have made it vibrant with your use of colours and especially the patchwork. Great design.
The colors you have chosen are really calm and beautiful. Definitely a feeling of autumn.
I am especially impressed with the little hexagons. All in all, beautifully done handwork.
Your hand stitching brings so much beautiful texture and movement to this piece. I especially love the intricate and colorful hexie carpet on the woodland floor. You’ve perfectly captured that quiet, peaceful feeling of an autumn walk, well done.
I love how you combined traditional and contemporary in your piece. I agree with others about the colors, textures and the autumn spirit. Very well done, as always.
