Footprints on the Moon
For the quilt Time #4, I am breaking away from Stefan Zweig’s book Stellar Moments of Humankind. Written a hundred years ago, the book predates many monumental events—most notably, humanity stepping onto the moon on July 20, 1969. This defining moment proved space travel was possible, captured perfectly by Neil Armstrong’s famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
For this quilt, I used the iconic image of Armstrong’s footprint, alongside an image of the Earth as viewed from the moon. I deliberately altered the proportions of these images, playing with their scale to fit my artistic vision.
Like the other quilts in this series, I used a fused appliqué technique. The black sky is made of commercial fabric, while the Earth and lunar surfaces are made from my own hand-dyed fabrics. The entire piece is densely machine-quilted, with the sky featuring the same quilting pattern as the previous three Time quilts to maintain continuity.

You stitching is always so effective and the addition of the portrait on each piece is a great idea.
I remember well this special moment ! I was visiting my pen friend in the UK and we had dinner on front of the TV with a tray to watch this unique moment ! A new experience for me !
Amazingly, I was in the US in July 1969 and have some vague memories of all the commotion and of having witnessed this historic moment on TV as a little girl.
The idea of a small portrait of the historical person in each of your pieces is simply brilliant.

Your machine stitching gives this piece the texture that really shows the moon surface well, and gives the dark sky its depth. I like the fabrics you have used for all elements of the deign. Great work
I so admire the expert stitching in the black background and the moon’s surface. How clever to introduce Armstrong’s footprint. Remember the occasion well, was vacationing in Austria with my mum. We watched TV in the hotel not quite believing what we saw. Wonderful portrait!
Yes I remember this occasion very good also. We were staying with my sister. It was indeed a milestone in history.
Love your needle drawing of the young Neil Armstrong and the shoe on the moon, but can’t figure out what the other black and white pieces are. Your stitching, as always, is meticulous . Very well done.
This is an intriguing depiction of a monumental moment in time. I was 16, visiting cross-town friends. We all stopped and rushed indoors to see history being made. The quilting somehow adds to the mystery of the event.

A defining moment in history, especially for those of us old enough to remember it happening. Your fabrics and stitching work well to recreate this image and I like how you have kept some common threads running through your series.
