Footprints on the Moon

For the quilt Time #4, I am breaking away from Stefan Zweig’s book Stellar Moments of Humankind. Written a hundred years ago, the book predates many monumental events—most notably, humanity stepping onto the moon on July 20, 1969. This defining moment proved space travel was possible, captured perfectly by Neil Armstrong’s famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

For this quilt, I used the iconic image of Armstrong’s footprint, alongside an image of the Earth as viewed from the moon. I deliberately altered the proportions of these images, playing with their scale to fit my artistic vision.

Like the other quilts in this series, I used a fused appliqué technique. The black sky is made of commercial fabric, while the Earth and lunar surfaces are made from my own hand-dyed fabrics. The entire piece is densely machine-quilted, with the sky featuring the same quilting pattern as the previous three Time quilts to maintain continuity.
