When I showed my family my quilts, everyone agreed that I should make a quilt from my military years, so I went a little in reverse and thought it was appropriate.
In Israel, everyone who turns 18 must serve two years in the army for women and three years for men. After graduating from high school and before moving on with their lives.
I volunteered for the Paratrooper Corps, folding and inspecting parachutes at a time when parachutes were very useful in the military. Hard work but full of satisfaction. In the mornings before sunrise, we lined up to hand out the parachutes to the soldiers. Each parachute has a back pocket that the person in charge signed, and when the soldiers returned, we loved reading what they wrote to us. It was a good, challenging time before moving on with life.
In my quilt I’m 19 years old…
I really loved this period, I stayed in touch with many friends who became soulmates thanks to the time we spent together.
