Kaylene Maalste – Time #3

Time #3 is based on the Mmere Dane Adinkra symbol from West Africa (Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire) it translates to “Time Changes” It represents change, the impermanence of all things in life, and the dynamic nature of good and bad luck The symbol serves as a reminder that nothing in life is permanent- circumstances, fortunes, and experiences constantly evolve, and that just as time never stands still we must embrace transformation, resilience and growth. (quote from Adrinka Art).

Materials used are printed commercial cotton, batik printed cotton, embroidery thread. The design is reversed appliqued and the quilt is hand embroidered and quilted.

  1. And again, a piece that is a lesson in a subject I am not familiar with. Perfect execution against a background that highlights the subject.

  2. The dense stitching and the fact that it is on a printed fabric makes the symbol stand out on the background.

I like the simplicity of the symbol.

  3. Beautiful stitching.
I like the vibrant colors you use for the symbols in this series.

  4. I allowed myself to edit your photo by enlarging it. I wanted your amazing hand stitching to be seen from the first sight. The stitching works so well with dots on background fabric. Your choice of the topic also is very interesting: it teaches us that even in old cultures people were able to express their thoughts with symbols and were able to read those symbols. Are we?…

I love all these different symbols you have found, so interesting. Great hand-stitching which really accentuates the motif itself, lovely work, well done.

  8. Very dramatic shapes enhanced by the colour choices. The dense handstitching is lovely and gives a feel of kantha work to the piece.
