White Birch Tree Bark

Aspen trees are very popular in the US and White Birch trees are very popular in Lithuania. Although aspen are somewhat similar in appearance to some species of birch, birch trees belong to an entirely different family of trees. Birch are famous for having bark that peels back like paper; aspen’s bark does not peel.

As I lived in both countries, this time I am focusing on white (or silver) birch tree bark. I tried to show how the bark peels off.

The background fabric I made last summer in a break down screen printing workshop with Leah Higgins in England. The inner side of peeling off bark is made of my own eco print.

I used hand stitching and free motion machine quilting to create texture.

Inspiration
  1. Beautiful matching of colour to the bark. The 3 D is inspirational.

  2. Chantal Guillermet

It is such a clever idea to use the peeling of the bark as your inspiration ! the 3D movement adds a lot to your piece !

  3. I am always fascinated by the elegance of the birch trees. In my village, you encounter some groups of birch in little glades that create an idyllic view. I am always amazed and interested in your interpretations of the trees. Using 3D is very clever, and the reproduction of colours is successful.
I am looking forward to discovering your subsequent work. Chapeau!

Lovely work; I really like the way that you have created the peeling bark. The air is obviously very clean where you are because the bark is so pale! Well done!

  5. Your background fabric is beautiful and I love the idea of the 3D peeling bark. Bravo.

  6. You captured the peeling bark beautifully, so lifelike! The 3D effect adds much and so does the perfect stitching. Wonderful!

  7. I also really like to check the peeling bark of the trees. Excellent idea of yours and excellent execution. You managed to express what you wanted. I love your colors.

  8. A very clever and effective piece. The textures, colours and 3D work beautifully show the birch bark. Well done.

The colour and texture of your fabrics are perfect and the way you have created the 3D peeling effect is very realistic. This is beautiful

  12. Wonderful interpretation! I was intrigued when I saw your quilt. Very effective use of fabric and stitching to create the 3 D effect. Bravo!

  13. I love the 3D parts in your quilt. It’s almost real! Well done, Maryte.
