The Evil

The devil, tarot card number 15, represents the evil. He is the opposite of the Pope. He creates discord; he is a slanderer and a sower of strife. An evil dragon, a winged serpent, or a basilisk accompanies him. He embodies evil and recalls the Egyptian Apep, the symbol of the forces of chaos. From John, Apocalypse XII,9: “The great dragon, the ancient serpent, the one we call the Devil and Satan and who seduces the whole earth.” Wearing horns, the symbol of wisdom, he is the fallen angel Lucifer. He brings light and knowledge but uses lies and leads to error. It is dominated by black, which recalls darkness, nocturnal shadows, and death.
