Sonia Ruiz – Horizon
Horizon
As we can see with this theme, horizon can be interpreted differently. I have chosen both the horizon that is the line that forms the apparent boundary between earth and sky and combined it with the spiritual horizon or faith we all search for. The word horizon comes from the Greek word “horo’s” meaning limit. In this sense horizon means the limits of a persons vision, everyone has a spiritual horizon, the difference, however, is that a spiritual horizon is not bound by limits.
I’ve continued with the theme of the famous floating gardens (chinampas) of Xochimilco, Mexico. The word Xochimilco In the Nahuatl language, signifies “place of flores”. I’ve chosen to depict an indigenous woman in a canoe on her way to selling her beautiful and colorful flowers. She is moving from the darkness of uncertainty to the light of hopefulness and faith for a new and brighter day for her and her family.
Materials : Cotton batiks, felt, satin and embroidered ribbons, yarns, an Our Lady of Guadalupe pin, crinoline tulle, bobbin thread, embroidery floss, sharpie.
Technique : Confetti, raw appliqué, couching. Painting with sharpies, bound with tulle.

The confetti technique you have used gives a real feel of dense foliage, and focuses the viewer on the far horizon. The detail in the lady and her canoe and its cargo are lovely. Well done

This quilt reminds me so much of our wonderful trip to Xochimilco. I can feel the warmth of the sun, hear the music and sense the smells. Beautiful interpretation and very nice technique.
