Insects – Tussah Silk Moth

My inspiration for the last insect in my second pair, is the Tussah  moth, which is the source for silk fabric and fibres.

For this quilt I decided to celebrate the moth by using mostly silk fabric and thread. The moth itself is made from commercially dyed silk, with detail added by hand stitching with fine silk threads. The moth is then mounted loosely onto a bed of silk paper made from coccoon strippings, so that it stands somewhat proud of the background.  I then added small squares of sari silk and strands of silk fibres aroubd the edges of the coccoon paper, to give some depth to that layer, and to demostrate the fibres and fabrics that are made from the contents of the silk coccoons. Finally the base layer is part of an old dressmaking paper pattern, to hint at the how the silk fabric may be eventually be used.

I used a little artistic license in the colouring and structure of the moth, but I so loved the silk fabric that I could not resist! I hope that the story of the silk moth jusitfies this
