Helen Hazon – Artist style #1
Inspiration – the landscape paintings of David Hockney and the scenery of the Applecross peninsula in NW Scotland.
I chose David Hockney as my artist for 3 reasons – he’s English, he’s still alive and he paints colourful landscapes. For the topics for the 6 quilts in this year’s series I decided to concentrate on one of my family’s favourite areas – Applecross – where we have a short holiday every year. I have many photographs of this area and I will select 6 different landscape views to recreate in fabric. The main challenge for me will be working with the bright colours that Mr Hockney uses which are rarely in my palette. I will use piecing, applique and free motion machine embroidery to create the quilts.
The first quilt in my series shows the beginning of the village of Applecross seen from across Applecross Bay. The tide is in and the mountains of the Isle of Skye form the background.

Very evoctaive landscape and the colors you have chosen really do speak of Scotland. You have given your little cottage a cosy feel as it nestles amongst the hills. Well done
Helen, you really surprised me this time with your ability to reincarnate into David Hockney’s style. The same attention to the color and details, really well done.
