Kaylene Maalste – Time #5
My inspiration for Time #5 is the Māori Porowhita which means “Circle”. The Porowhita pendant symbolises life’s endless journey. It honours harmony, personal growth, and the meaningful connections we share with each other and with the natural world. A Porowhita is most commonly carved from pouname (New Zealand greenstone/jade). The Porowhita is given as a gift at special occasions, such as birth and other family celebrations.
I chose a green batik for the main symbol and a cotton textured fabric for the background. The background is machine quilted and the symbol is quilted by hand.
Your fabric choices for this quilt are excellent. Even the background is not hand-stitched like the previous ones, it still works well for your series.
I am always impressed by the themes you choose and admire the knowledge they convey; I also really love this current quilt, which combines simplicity with a richness colors.
A nice selection of fabrics and, as always, beautiful stitching. However, I feel something is missing here to make it even clearer what a Porowhita is. Perhaps you could have used some more contrasting colors for the stitching inside the circle?
This quilt is lovely in its simplicity. The handquilting enhances the design.
A very striking colour of the centre fabric against the darker background gives this piece great impact. I like the hand stitching of the pendant and the machine stitching works well for the background. Well done
The green batik has exactly the right color to create a jade stone. Where is your excellent handstiched background? Such a pity you didn’t continue this.
Lovely use of color and choice of fabrics. I looked for the quilting of the background and couldn’t see it. The story behind the pendant and what it symbolizes is very meaningful.
