Helen Hazon – Time #4

Crazy quilting.

This type of quilting became very popular in the later 19th century and is associated with the Victorian era.

Scraps of all sorts of fabrics were used, but silks and velvets were favourites and the colours were often quite

dark. These pieces were stitched to a backing in random arrangements. When this piecing was complete it was

embellished with lots of colourful hand stitching – embroidery, ribbon work, applique, buttons, lace etc.

For my crazy quilt I have used all cotton fabrics in light, neutral colours. The embellishing – applique and

machine embroidery is all in one colour and is in rayon threads.

  1. Your stitching is always very neat. Choice of fabrics and threads is different from traditional crazy quilts but still very interesting. What comes next?

  2. Starting from tradionnal crazy quilt you have created your own, with subtle colours and beautiful stitching ! well done !

  3. It’s nice to see crazy quilting in such muted colors. Lots of nice details and beautifully executed. The blue color gives a nice contrast.

  4. The subtle colour palette is very restful and the whole piece is so beautifully stitched, great work!

  5. A wonderful tribute to crazy quilting, it has a peaceful nature to it in contrast to the Victorian interpretations that were also popular in the 70’s. great choice of fabrics and stitching. Bravo

  6. This is a well executed modern twist on a classic style. Using light cottons instead of dark silks and velvets gives the design a fresh, airy feel. Well done.

  7. Wonderful, a combination of different materials including hand stitching and lots of details that bring the work together to perfection. Wonderful

I have always loved crazy patchwork, and this piece is no exception. The fabrics that you have used are great and I like the way that you have limited the palette so that the blue details stand out. Lovely work
