Bozena Wojtaszek – Country – Flora/Fauna

My take on the fauna and flora of France may seem a bit tricky but it represents the best what interests me in this beautiful country the most. After official proclamation of the Republic (1792) the idea was born to replace the old Gregorian calendar with a new republican calendar. In this secular calendar months of the year were named after natural elements and each day was named for a seed, tree, flower, fruit, animal or tool instead of saints’ day names and Christian festivals. This brilliant idea resonates with me and seems so refreshing now, when we have to reconnect with nature again for more sustainable lifestyle. French Republican Calendar finally was abandoned by Napoleon in 1806 but thanks to our modern technologies it survived as a twitter account I follow on daily basis. That’s why I decided to make a visual abstract of random plants and creatures brought to attention in the new world of freedom and equality over 200 years ago.

Machine applique and machine quilting.
