Water : on The Surface

For this 2nd quilt in my “water” series, I’ve evoked a phenomenon that takes place on the water: the harvesting of salt in the salt marshes near where I live. The salt forms on the surface of the water thanks to the wind and the sun. Since time immemorial, it has been the basis of commerce and a currency of exchange. It also symbolizes life.

Based on one of my photos, I created this piece using reverse and fused appliqué.

It’s an autumnal representation of the marshes, when the water takes on the color of the samphire growing on the edges of the ponds, which turn red.

Dyed cotton, vliesofix, silk, acrylic paint, neocolor II.

Detail view:

  1. I immediately recognised it as yours! You have captured the true colours and I like the degradation in the pools of water. Nice work.

  2. Your interpretation is great, I love the interplay of colours that occur in the salt pans. The reverse applique give your interpretation depth of how the salt pans must look in reality. Bravo

  3. It is very interesting to see the phenomenon you are talking about. And the tree that stands alone in the landscape seems to say that I too have rights to exist. perfect

  4. A great composition. The colors look so real! Love it.

  5. It’s unmistakably Chantal! I love how you stay devoted to your style.
The texture in this piece is palpable and brings it to life, love it!

  6. What a wonderful use of color, line and shape. It depicts the salt extratcion process perfectly. The tree seems to anchor your composition. Very nice!

  7. Your applique techniques have created depth in the salt pans and the colours give atmosphere. A calm and interesting composition.

  8. I love the gentle colours and shapes of the salt pools. It gives a timeless quality to the landscape, and as always beautifully stitched

  9. I had the opportunity to visit the salt pans in the Camargue and admire the extraordinary colours you have reproduced in your quilt with your recognizable and praiseworthy style. Bravo!
