Sonia Ruiz – Series #2 – Sacred Heart – Patchwork

Continuing with the heart theme, my second sacred heart quilt is made in a crazy quilt technique with fabric scraps,  Gutermann #12 variegated threads, lace, ribbons, eyelash yarn, beads and vintage buttons.

I first pieced all the light fabrics, then the colored fabrics.  With the Gutermann thread I used the decorative stitches on my Janome sewing machine on all the seams of the heart fabric.  I then did reverse appliqué.  I placed wool batting under the heart to give it a fuller, trapunto look. I embellished it with bits and pieces of laces, ribbons, yarns, beads, pearls, vintage buttons, a scapular from one of my children and some jewelry pieces that my dad had given me.

  1. Sonia, this is an interesting compliment to the first quilt, the change of technique to crazy patchwork was a great choice. The amount of detail is interesting and adds to the Victorian feel of the crazy patchwork. Cheers

  2. carolinehiggs

This is a lovely second piece, although the techniques are completely different they have same ‘feel’ to them. I love the way that you have used so many small decorative pieces which work so well with the crazy.

  3. Chantal Guillermet

I have never tried crazy, for me it was too dramatic but your choice of light fabric gives to your piece a quiet atmosphere. I also like how you use personal items like jewelry. It is a nice second piece.

  4. Sonia, you have lent a Victorian ‘feel’ to this second piece of yours, which is again touching, especially as you filled it with mementoes to add a special touch.

  5. joanbrailsford

This is a very interesting use of crazy patchwork, and is a lovely addition to your first piece. I like the way that you have used special ‘bits and pieces’ again, and these add a really personal touch. Well done

  6. Quite a different feel the soft background lets your special bits shine. The crazy heart has a real victorian feel.

  7. This is a very gentle quilt and a great contrast to your first piece. I like your crazy patchwork and the many little embellishments.

  8. Very effective crazy quilting for this piece. I love the heart and although it is a very different piece as your first one it still complements the other one. Nice use of all the embellishments. You go girl!

  9. So nice how you used crazy patchwork in two different colourschemes for the heart and his surrounding. A see Joseph and Maria in you heart. Good use of the lace, ribbons, etc.
