Els Mommers – Artist style #1

JOAN MIRO 1

My chosen artist is: Joan Miro (1893-1983). His surrealistic style fascinated me and I like his use of  mostly primary colors. He is famous for the use of symbols which comes from his interest in the unconscious and subconscious mind. His symbols resemble simplified children’s drawings.

I drew the lines for  the middle part of my design with closed eyes and filled in the shapes with colors. Then the design was transferred to a white background and the shapes appliqued. I used mostly primary colors, but just as Miro often did I added a little bit of green. All the shapes are surrounded by a wide stitched black cordon line as are the added symbols.

Miro loved  spirals, eyes and especially stars – his bedroom ceiling was fully painted with stars-, so I quilted the surrounding white background with these symbols.

The whole process can be seen on my blog: http://kunamola.blogspot.com
