The Skeleton of the Aspen Leaf

I started this year’s challenge by comparing two of my favorite trees: the aspen and the white birch. Originally I thought that they belonged to the same family but through this challenge I learned that they were two completely different trees.

I already studdied the barks and the wood grains and now I am looking into the leaves. The color of leaves would change through the seasons but the shape and the skeleton would remain the same. In this quilt I have a skeleton of the aspen tree that is best seen when the leaf dries out.

The skeleton is machine embroidered on the piece of black Dupioni silk. I hand stitched it to highlight the edges and some stems of the leaf. The black background then was machine quilted.
