Ann Turley – Time #4
The Telegraph
The invention of the telegraph was not from a single thought, but instead came about from several other evolutions in the field of electricity. The first practical inventions pretty much appeared at the same time, around 1837 from British gentlemen, William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone. Samuel Morse of New York had creatre Morse code in 1832 and convinced the US government to help build the pole and line system in 1843-44. This system of poles, wires and insulators started the telegraph era in the United States, which stood the test of time for over 100 years.
My quilt is constructed from commercial cottons, organza, tulle and rhinestones. I have also used black Misty Fuse to create texture, and with decorative machine stitching.

Thank you for the history lesson. The tones of your fabrics really takes us far back in time and, I think, are right for your story. You even added insulators- I am old enough to remember those. Love your work!
This piece has an aged look taking us back to those old lines. I really like the way that you have built the landscape. Great subject choice.
I like the composition and the fabric you used for this piece. The perspective gives depth to the piece.
Such an interesting period in the history of inventions.
Beautiful and powerful composition. Love the background fabric you chose and how the organza on top of it changes it into something completely different.
Well done, I like the perspective of the poles and your colour palette. Cheers
The background is perfect, I love the variety of colors that work wonderfully together. And of course the story is a chapter from history.
I really like the fabrics you haver used to create this graphic imagery. The design is very well done and does indeed tell the story of how the telegraph marched across the country. The misty fuse gives depth to the hillsides. Great work
