Star shapes in nature in the style of Hilma af Klint.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are among the first abstract work known in western history. Her later period abstract art delved into symbolism with a combination of geometry, figuration, scientific research and religious practices. Her studies of organic growth, including shells and flowers, helped her portray life through a spiritual lens.
For this series I decided to study the different shapes found in nature. My first quilt in the style of Hilma af Klint is all about stars, star-shaped creatures that live underwater, star-shaped plants and flowers, stars found in seeds, fruits and crystals.
Materials and technique: cotton fabric, cotton batting, poly cotton thread, embroidery floss, printing ink. Monotype print on fabric, machine quilted, hand embroidery.

I did not know Hilma af Klint and her abstract and symbolic vision. Your representation of the various shapes of the stars with the soft and delicate colours give a sense of peace and inner vision. Great start for your series.

Great choice of artist whose mostly very large works I have seen in different musea. They never fail to make a huge impression. The style in your quilt is very recognizable, chapeau! The execution in soft colours beautiful.
I didn’t know of this artist until I read your introduction. I must research more as i love the idea of working with Nature’s shapes and patterns. Your quilt is certainly in her style and has beautiful designs in calm and peaceful colours.

I haven’t heard of this artist, but your colours and shapes do reflect the kind of abstract designs which you describe as her main features. This has a very peaceful feel and I look forward to the next in the series
All I can say is to agree with others that your quilt radiates serenity and peace. I wonder if quilting in straight lines has something to do with that?
