Genevieve Guadalupe – Artist style #1

Star shapes in nature in the style of Hilma af Klint.

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are among the first abstract work known in western history. Her later period abstract art delved into symbolism with a combination of geometry, figuration, scientific research and religious practices. Her studies of organic growth, including shells and flowers, helped her portray life through a spiritual lens.

For this series I decided to study the different shapes found in nature. My first quilt in the style of Hilma af Klint is all about stars, star-shaped creatures that live underwater, star-shaped plants and flowers, stars found in seeds, fruits and crystals.

Materials and technique: cotton fabric, cotton batting, poly cotton thread, embroidery floss, printing ink. Monotype print on fabric, machine quilted, hand embroidery.

  1. A great approach to your to your ‘in the style of’ quilts. I love the restful colour palette and the differing star forms.

  2. Fabulous interpretation, and I think Caro has said it all. Bravo

  10. All I can say is to agree with others that your quilt radiates serenity and peace. I wonder if quilting in straight lines has something to do with that?
