Els Mommers – Nature #3

RAINFOREST

For this third quilt in the Nature series I was inspired by my daily walks in our beautiful rainforest.

The background is ice dyed with Procion paint. The rocks are made from the same piece of cloth that I had made for the first two Nature pieces. The big leaves of the elephant-ear plant are made from small pieces of organza in between two pieces of organza. The contours and veins of the leaves are machine-stitched and then cut out with a soldering iron. Ferns are printed on organza on a gelliplate, cut out with the soldering iron and glued and sewed on the background. The heliconia flowers are hand painted and fused on the background as is the palm tree. They are then thread painted with several colors of polyester thread. Lichen is made on water soluble fleece and sewed onto the rocks with monofilament thread. The large tree trunk is made from a kind of cork fabric.

The whole piece is hand quilted. The elephant-ears are only partly sewed onto the fabric to get a 3D effect.

The whole process can be seen on: http://kunamola.blogspot.com
