Maryte Collard – Artist style #5

Dusk

My choice of the artist was Russian painter Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841- 1910), whose style was realism. I am not copying his works but only following his style that had a focus on light effects. In all his paintings light plays a very important role.

For 7 years I’ve been mesmerized by the photo of Richard Doughty, published in AramcoWorld magazine in 2015:

In this photo walls, windows, doors and satellite dishes tessellate at twilight into a patchwork pattern in the madinah, or walled old city, of Fez, Morocco, as a pedestrian passes into view along one of the city’s typically narrow stone streets.

I always wanted to make a quilt of the full size of this photo but it seemed unimaginable. This challenge gave me a chance to make a smaller version, where I used only a small part of the photo:

Still it was hard work to cut all the pieces and understand in what order to fuse them, and how to get the light to shine and reflect from the walls.

I used all hand dyed cotton fabrics. Everything is fused with Wonder Under. Densely machine quilted.

  1. Bravo a stunning interpretation. The choice of fabrics give the sense of dusk and the ever so small touch of light unifies the design.

  2. I really like this piece, well done. Such attention to detail, the colours work so well and the different thread colours really tie it all together. Fantastic work!

  3. So many details! I like the colors you used. The light is very well executed. Love it!!

It was a very good idea to focus on the center of the picture. Very well excecuted with a sense of detail and I love how you introduced the light !

Beautiful! Great use of colors and the light is so effective. Incredible attention to details. Fantastic piece! Bravo!

  6. You did a good job of transferring the image to your quilt . I am very inspired by the stitching and the light that emerges from the darkness.

  7. A great interpretation! Fantastic details, great choice of fabrics and that yellow light is a great eye catcher. Liked the introduction of that small white light! The stitching is really outstanding.

  8. Love the idea and very successful execution!

  9. I love it! A great piece of work in all respects. The small area of light is a wonderful accent in the night-time scene. Beautifully done.

  10. Wow, beautifully done! Your quilt feels peaceful and full of hope.

  11. I love the photograph and the way that you have interpreted it in your design. The colours are very effective and truly illustrate the contrast between the light and dark in the pedestrian street. Beautiful work

  12. You really succeeded in getting the atmosphere of the painting. It is a wonderful piece and the light is such a beautiful accent. I keep looking at all the different pieces and the stitching. Bravo.

  13. Wow! You captured the feel of the quiet, sleepy city with a dramatic contrast of light emerging from the darkness. Skillful use of color and stitching. Well done!
