Sonia Ruiz – Nature #5

Prickly Pear

Cacti take the spotlight today.  These cacti or “nopal” procure a bounty of blooms.  Once the blooms fade a red, pear shaped fruit replaced the blooms.  These edible fruits are known as “tunas” or prickly pears, offering a delightful surprise to those who encounter them.

Since November 2nd just passed, the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), is a time when we remember and celebrate our loved ones who have passed. The monarch butterflies represent the souls of our loved ones, one of them represents my father, who are returning to earth for their annual visit and also surrounding and welcoming the cardinal which represents my little grandson Lucas.

It’s been said that when you see a cardinal or butterfly, it means they are visiting you. They usually show up when you most need them or miss them. They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they are near you.

Materials and techniques:  Hand dyed cotton bed linen, hand dyed gauze, raw edge appliqué, vintage DMC embroidery floss, hand dyed Oaxacan yarn. French knots, 3 D flowers, photo transfer technique, thread painting and free motion
