Kaylene Maalste – Series #3 – Techniques – Pieced Applique
For my third quilt I decided to explore what I call pieced applique, the technique I followed is from a workshop I took a long time ago by Elizabeth Barton, and it is also illustrated in Gloria Loughman’s book “Quilted Symphony”. I began by drawing out my design on non fusible pellon then copied these shapes onto freezer paper and you all know the rest about using freezer paper templates. My design was influenced by the Autumn leaves contrasted against earth colours and the green of trees before Autumn.
I hand applique the shapes to my backing pellon using the under and over sequence, after which I tore away the pellon and made my usual quilt sandwich. The top was free motion quilted and then I cut out the tree shapes from fusible pellon and ironed them in place.

A beautiful piece. You have captured the feeling and colours of a late autumn day. I had forgotten about Gloria’s technique with the interfacing before freezer paper.
I really like this piece Kaylene ! I like how we can imagine the shapes of trees in the distance behind the trees silhouettes of the foreground. The choice of colours is very effective.

I haven’t encountered this method before but it is something I may try because the results are really effective. I lobe your choice of background fabrics, and the tree shapes are really striking. Well done.
