Sonia Ruiz – Time #3

In this art quilt series I will explore the passage of time using the 25 ton Aztec sun calendar and Frida Kahlo’s life journey. Each quilt will represent a different time or stage in her journey, and the enduring legacy of her art.

This 3rd quilt has a colorful Aztec calendar broken open with Frida’s art coming out and surrounding Frida at her easel as she paints and has roots growing from her feet connecting to her Mexican heritage and to her art which surrounds her. This time period captures her agonizing and tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera, her devastating miscarriages, and her explosive creative evolution.
Materials:  commercial fabrics, Aztec sun cut out from an old t-shirt, red ribbon, raw edge appliqué, free motion stitching, photo transfer on cotton appliqué to felt fabric, yarn roots couched

Very detailed and thoughtful work that represents this time of turmoil really well. I like the way that the ancient calendar is broken to allow the art to come tumbling out.

  9. This is a nice addition to your series once more expressing your love for Frida. The complexity of your art always amazes me, bravo!
