Els Mommers – Time #4

Artist statement: TIME #4: AZTEC CULTURE: MEXICO

The fourth piece in my Times series is inspired by our trip to Mexico: VISITING TIME: 1990

We loved the Maya/Aztec culture  a lot and visited many places. In the end bought a small statue representing an Aztec figure.

I used a photo of this statue combined with a painting with Mixtec influence from a painting in Santa Rita in Belize.

For the cohesion in my work I used the same background fabric as I used for Time # 2 and I also gave the figure a trophy in his hand , just like in the Santa Rita painting.

The whole figure is appliqued, first on Steam & Seam light with tulle, cut out and pressed onto the background fabric. After that it is intensively machine-embroidered.

Since the Aztecs were famous for their gold, I added a gold collar and golden face decoration.

The whole process can be seen on http://kunamola.blogspot.com
