Maryte Collard – Artist style #2

Antelope Canyon

My choice of the artist was Russian painter Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841- 1910). His style was realism. I am not copying his works but only am following his style that had a focus on natural lighting effects.

Seeing photos of Antelope Canyon in Arizona, USA, I couldn’t understand how it was possible to see those images in nature. Not until I got there myself in 2015.

Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of  sandstone due to flash flooding. The colors are created by beams of direct sunlight radiating down from openings at the top of the canyon and reflecting off the canyon walls. You have to be there at the right time of the year and of the day to capture the most beautiful images.

I made my Antelope Canyon quilt using my own photo taken on my visit there. I also used my own hand dyed cotton fabrics. All the pieces are fused with Wonder Under and densely machine quilted and thread painted.
