Els Mommers – D

Damselfish

Inspiration:  Corals and fishes growing and living in the tropical seas. For the letter D I choose the Four stripe Damselfish

The background is handpainted with a lot of water and Pebeo paint. The fishes and the elkhorn coral I painted on fabric prepared with gesso. The fan coral is made with colored puffpaste. All the other coral is shrinked tyvek and painted lutrador

The whole piece is covered with silver grey organza and some pieces of shimmering open woven sheer fabric. The sea is quilted with a bubble motif.

Pictures of the whole process can be seen on my blog: http://kunamola.blogspot.com

Looks like one more piece of incredible artistic approach and workmanship. The sheer fabric and organza gives me a look of sunshine playing with water in the depth of coral reef.

  6. Another very nice piece for your series ! I like your coral reef and weeds, they are so realistic ! and the use of grey organza is a very good idea.

  7. I’m a big fan of your underwater kingdom and love to see another beauty in the series.

  8. Never knew these were called damselfish! Love your new piece, especially admire the many techniques used so effectively for the corals.

  9. Wonderful use of color and detail. Tyvek and Lutradur are so versatile. I’ve often seen both used as rocks and stones. Coral works great as well!

  10. It is amazing how you create all the different underwater world quilts. The use of all the different materials make me jealous. Beautiful detailed work.

Beautiful as always, and the mixture of media and techniques create a wonderfully textured seabed. This is such a lovely series that I look forward to seeing it completed.

Your piece comes alive with all the textures in the sea plants. Beautiful and really makes me want to snorkel in your waters.

  14. So much, color, texture and detail. I feel I can almost touch them. Beautiful composition and another lovely quilt to add to your series. Well done!
