Kaylene Maalste – Country – Artist

The inspiration for my artist is a contemporary artist – Marian Quigley she is noted for her “hard edge” painting. Hard edge painting is an approach to abstract painting and is characterized by areas of flat colour with sharp, clear (or ‘hard’) edges.

I chose to design a beach scene and used blue printed fabrics for the sea, white fabric with cheese cloth for the waves and a sandy print colour for the beach. The sky is textured blue fabric. To make the design different I added three orange umbrellas. The quilt is hand quilted and bound with an off white texture fabric.

Very effective Kaylene, I love the way that you have managed to create ‘flat’ and textured areas.

  2. I like how you managed to make your piece with pure lines according to your artist’s work, but adding the orange umbrellas as a personal touch ! very nice piece

  3. Kaylene, thanks for introducing me to Marian Quigley. I really like her use of her colours. You managed very well to bring back her style with the textile and your quilting. Bravo!

  4. Your composition has the key elements of Marian’s painting style, minimalism, hard edge abstraction, vibrant colour and flowing lines. You have combined both her style and yours together and made it your own. Well done Kaylene!

  5. Another new to me artist! Great capture of the essence of her style, great job!

  6. I love the painting that inspired you and you did excellent job translating the painting to fabric and also the use of colors.

It is very interesting to learn about new artist and her style. You reflected it well with colors and lines, but stepped one step further by adding texture.

  8. This is so bright and cheerful and is a great representation of your artist’s style. The colours are great and the umbrellas add a good focus.

  9. Very effective with the use of the complementary colours. It really resembles the artist’s style and complements it with the texture of your hand quilting. well done.

  10. Another new artist – so nice to get to know her. Your piece is a very effective rendition, the umbrellas and your stitching make it your own. Well done.

I like the hard edges of the artist you have chosen, and the flat areas you have created reflect this style. The umbrellas give the splash of colours that really sets off the design. Well done

  12. Your quilt is cheerful and inviting. I would love to dive into that beautifual water!

  13. I looked at her work and I am impressed. Lovely style. Your piece is a great reflection of her style. You made it yours by adding the umbrellas. Well done.
