Paulette Meldrum – Series #2 – From Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean -From the Neve
This quilt is my interpretation of the head of the glacier, and its movement after it has left the upper, high altitude snowfields and started its journey downwards through steep sided mountains. In its upper reaches the glacier fractures to form crevasses, ice blocks and at times pinnacles of ice. The glacier grinds its way slowly over the bed rock until its reaches the terminal face and the ice melt forms the glacial lake which will feature in the next quilt in the series.
The pattern was redrawn many times until I was happy with the design and it was then transferred to freezer paper for templates. The pattern had to be adjusted several times during the construction. I used my hand dyed fabrics, with the addition of crystalline organza to create the special features and the crevasses, and white satin and organza were used on the upper snow and ice field.

Paulette this is a beautiful interpretation of the river on it’s journey, the crystalline organza is a great touch, and the quilting patterns do give the feel of rocks and cliffs. Bravo

Having walked on the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park (here in Alberta), and having seen the Hubbard Glacier of Alaska from a cruise ship up the Inside Passage…Your second piece in the series impresses me not only with its beauty but its interpretation of the blue of the ice and the power of the Glacier to travel over and through rock. Well done!
