Strawberry

For the letters theme this year I decided to go with illuminated initials for food products. This is a perfect combination of my love for medieval art and food art. And S is for strawberry.

Medieval art in general is my constant source of inspiration. Through the years I managed to create quite a lot of art quilts with medieval themes. Now it is a great opportunity to focus on medieval art in the margins of beautiful manuscripts.

Technically I use here all of my favorite techniques – applique, beading, embroidery, hand and machine quilting. I also dyed the background fabric for the “old papirus” effect and painted some extra gold spots just like the medieval monks did.

Detail views:

  1. It’s an excellent following of your kitchen theme. Curiously, we have had a hint from medieval art. I love the finesse of the strawberry and your embroidery.

  2. I waited to see what you would come up with and I am not disappointed! It sure looks like a page of manuscript, your caught it perfectly!

  3. Middle Ages are my favourite period in History. The choice of illuminated letters is a very good one and your strawberry and embroidery stitches are beautiful.

  8. Waht a great idea for the letter series. I also love Medieval manuscripts and artwork and you have represented this beautifully. I like the care you have taken in your choice of fabric and colouring to hint at old paper, and the additionl of the strawberry gives it a lovely focal point. Well done.
