P – Pyramid:  Ixmoja of the Nohoch Mul group In Coba

Inspiration:  Ixmoja is the highest pyramid in the ancient Mayan city of Coba on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Coba is an ancient Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula, located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, near Cancun.  Coba is one of the few archeological sites in Mexico where you are still allowed to climb up the pyramid.   The highest pyramid at Coba is Ixmoja, at about 138feet/42 meters in height.  It is a dizzying 112 steps to the top, and is the highest pyramid in northern Yucatan.  The site is less famous than Chichén Itzá and the ruins that are spread out in the jungle less preserved, but the climb up the Ixmoja pyramid of the Nohoch Mul group, sure is an adventure.   It’s name means large hill or great mound.  The site is the nexus of the largest network of stone stelae ( free standing carved stone slabs with legible historical data) that document ceremonial life and important events of the Late Classic Period (AD 600-900)
Technique:  Hand dyed fabrics, photo printing on fabric, raw edge appliqué, inktense pencils, confetti technique, free motion machine quilting.
Detail view:
  1. Easily recognisable as yours! I love the contrast between the detail of the pyramid and the way you have constructed the trees.

  2. The way you use the confetti technique is very effective and gives your trees a very realistic look. The whole composition is very well balanced and harmonious. Bravo !

The techniques you have used are perfect for the composition and work really well. I like the way that your quilting defines the background. Well done

  4. A beautiful second one in your series. I love how the design of the P so wonderful fits in Maya art. Awesome.

  5. Several great techniques here that make a distinct whole piece. The serpent is particularly good and I love the quilting in the sky.

  6. Very powerful pyramid! One can learn a lot from your pieces about the history and archeology of Mexico.

Thank you for the introduction to COBA. I was not familiar with it. You have done a great job of integrating the photo transfer into the piece. The sun behind the pyramid is a lovely touch and the large leaves give the feeling of the pyramid peeking out of the jungle.

  8. Your description is very interesting Sonia, and your quilt as well. Love the combination of the strong pronounced pyramid and the waving trees. Your letter P is outstanding and th whole piece has a great balance, love it.

  9. Your quilt beautifully demonstrates an almost photo-realistic quality and I truly appreciate your narrative. The multiple techniques you have used are perfect for piece.

  10. I especially like the quilting of the pyramid and the technique you used for the trees. A lovely quilt! Well done.

So good to learn some history of your country told with fabrics and stitches.

  13. I am always fascinated by Mexico and your works encourage me to make this trip. I really like the composition and how you inserted the pyramid in this very well made forest. Good job. Bravo Sonia
