Elsy Menko – Time #3

Innisfree

The story goes that when Irish born poet William Butler Yeats walked the streets of London and heard the sound of running water, it reminded him of the many summers spent in his youth at the tiny uninhabited island of Innisfree in Lough Gill, County Sligo, Ireland. That memory inspired him to write the poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” (1888) which became very famous.  It describes his yearning to escape urban life for the tranquility of nature and  leading a simple life The dream like poem is a favorite to many people. Time is mentioned by way of describing moments in the day, the morning, noon, evening and midnight. Widely considered one of the greatest poets of the English language, he received the Nobel prize for literature in 1923.

Poem:

My quilt was inspired by the many pictures of Innisfree that can be found on the internet. Commercial cotton fabrics, tule, machine piecing, confetti technique, some hand stitching.

  1. A delightful landscape, would have liked to have seen the lake included in the scene.

  2. A very successful interpretation of a beautiful poem. Love the strong green colors on the island – they provide a nice contrast to the water and the surroundings.

  3. I really like that you draw inspiration from poetry and build the work according to the story.

A great poem, the greens work really well and although the colour of the water is good and reflects the peaty ground I would have preferred the lines of the fabric to have been softer. Greta work!

  5. Like the others I am in love with the striking greens of the island.

The landscape looks so peaceful and the bench is an invitation to daydream. Lovely.

  6. The colours are lovely and the island looks so inviting – the green is very Irish! A great response to the text of the poem.
