Kaylene Maalste – Time #2

The second time symbol from Lyza Hayn’s publication on “Past, Present and Future Symbols” is one that represents three fish joined at the head. She states that “Three fishes one head is an ancient symbol found across various cultures and religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. The symbol is similar to the triquetra and represents the trinity or the three aspects of life. It can also be used to represent the past, present, and future.” I have interpreted the symbol using three fish pointing to a circle and filled the design with other elements.

Materials printed cotton and batik printed cotton. Technique is reversed applique and hand quilting using embroidery cotton thread.

Beautiful batik fabric and great composition. I love your hand quilting, it gives so much movement to the design. Great attention to details. Bravo!

  2. Looks like for the background you stitched black fabric with small white dots. It gives so much movement! Also very well balanced design, love it!

  3. What a strong and dynamic image, well done!

  4. I realize that my knowledge of using fish as symbols is very limited.
    I learned something new today!
Nice choice of fabrics. Great hand stitching – very effective on the dotted fabric.

  5. I am in awe with the dense stitching you have done on the background ! it really highlights the different appliqué symbols.

  6. The colour of the fish fabric is very striking against the dark background. I like the density of the stitching and the movement it creates.

  7. I’ll start with the background, the embroidery work is wonderful and the color of the subject is spectacular against this background.
