Candlestick Conversations

A new form of communication was patented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell but was invented in 1849 by Italian inventor Antonio Meucci. Time saw many changes in communicati0n, and I personally see the invention of the telephone as opening the floodgates. My quilt is of the candlestick phone, popular from the late 1890’s through the 1930’s. Initially it didn’t have a rotary dial; this addition was introduced in the 1920’s.

Materials used: commercial cottons, gold embossed lycra, black cording, a doily my grandmother crocheted  that is approximately 80 to 90 years old. I machine-quilted the quilt.
