Greetje Hein – Time #3
Mechanical clock
In the fourteenth century, the mechanical clock was invented.
Using gears, weights and an escapement invented in the thirteenth century.
Now it was possible to make the hands of a clock turn and thus indicate the passing of time.
The first mechanical clock was developed in a Benedictine monastery; it measured over 3m³, and its construction took more than ten years.
It was possible to read not only the time but also the positions of the celestial bodies from it. Although timekeeping in monasteries and cathedrals had a religious background, the secular authorities of the cities in the fourteenth century also wanted a timepiece, which was regarded as a status symbol.
As a result, most cities had their own clock by around 1400.
Except the background all parts of this quilt are from used jeans.
