Zea mays

My last two quilts for this year are about the agriculture that has adapted to the heat of the Sonoran Desert. Smoik Hu:n or Zea mays is also called Tohono O’ odham 60-day corn. This type of corn is a fast maturing desert-adapted corn traditionally grown with the summer rains in the floodwater fields of the Tohono O’ odham from Southern Arizona. “60-day” refers to the time it takes for ears to develop to milk stage in Southern Arizona if planted with the monsoons rains. Traditionally this variety is roasted and dried when the corn is in the milk stage. This variety is a farm favorite for making fresh corn masa for tortillas.

Materials and technique: cotton fabric, hand dyed fabric, cotton batting, poly thread. Machine pieced background, raw edge applique, machine quilted.
