Bella Kaplan – Time #2

I started this work in black and white, but it aged the character so much that  I threw it away, it was finished. I decided to add color and it changed for the better. I may go back to black and white later, but this time it didn’t work.
This girl is ten years old, decorated with the eternal ribbon that mom never gave up.
Hand-dyed cotton fabrics and commercial fabrics. Fused and machine quilted.

  1. Your quilt makes me look back to my own childhood. Yes, the ribbon was in style those days. I am glad that you decided to add color. Life of a ten years old must be colorful!

Fantastic quilt. I love the little flower fabric in the portrait, adding the playfulness of youth. And of course, yes the bows that mom insist on using. Great portrait. Bravo!

  3. We have to thank you for giving little Bella some color and not ageing her too early. Great portrait, as usual.

  4. What a cute little face. Love the bow in the hair.
I think it’s very fitting that you chose to switch to colors in this piece.

  5. The bow in the hair made me smile ! and of course reminds me of the little girl I used to be !

You were right to change the black and white version into a colorful one ! The colors aren’t too stong and give life to the portrait.

  6. She is a beautiful little girl and definitely deserves colour. Did we all have large bows in our hair? My sister and I certainly did – we called them moths.

This is a lovely portrait and the colour definitely worked well. The stitching is great and I like the hair bow that I think all of us ladies of a certain age would have had (I know that I did)

  8. A well executed design of a child’s face and the use of colours and stitching. However I find the use of a floral fabric on the face distracting and would have preferred the background to be all the same colour.

  9. The colour makes the image come alive and the ten year old is well depicted. I really like this addition to the series .Well done!
