Sonia Ruiz – Book #3
The Tortilla Quilt by Jane Tenorio Coscarelli
For my third challenge I’ve chosen the book The Tortilla Quilt. In each of Jane’s bilingual books, she would include a story, a recipe and a quilt pattern. This book includes a tortilla recipe the grandmother would make for the whole family.
The Tortilla Quilt is a beautiful story set in 1880. The story is about two friends, Maria and Sarah, who learn to quilt with Maria’s grandmother using flour sacks and clothing scraps and when completed they end up giving her their very first quilt they made. The story describes the process the girls follow to design and make the quilt. The story ends with the quilt being passed down to Maria’s daughter and becoming a family heirloom.
I continued the use of black thread to give the feel of an illustration, for the background I used bright yellow commercial fabric that I coffee dyed to tone down the color and used an acrylic wash on the floor to look like Saltillo tiles, free motion quilted grid lines, plants and title, hand stitched the butterfly’s flight, drew and cutout raw edge appliqués, used a dried flower stem to make the cross, made a miniature quilt using Jane’s uneven nine patch pattern and of course a butterfly representing Jane.

I really like this story, all the details of which are present in this quilt! I also like the idea of the dress left on the floor and cut out to integrate the fabric into the nine patch, as if the girls hadn’t finished working!
Very good idea to dye the yellow fabric with coffee, the color is perfect!
What a great story and I love that you have shown all the different things mentioned. Great colours beautifully stitched.
Very interesting story and very well translated from the text to the image. I love the 3D quilt on the wall and all other details. Lovely, witing for the next…
This is a delightful interpretation of Jane’s wonderful story. I like the inclusion of the little dress with a piece missing. It adds a personal touch to the creation of the quilt in the story.
Beautiful interpretation of the story. I love your attention to details and creativity. Bravo!
What a lovely story and interpretation of it. I love the detail of the dress on the floor with its cut out square. Lovely stitching and fabrics to complete the feeling of the grandmother’s house. Well done
A quilt in a quilt! What a lovely story and you have managed to include all details. Wouldn’t mind having a table like that! A lovely whimsical piece in which all attention goes to the dress with the missing piece. Well done!
I love the story. This whole piece is beautiful. The dress on the floor makes me smile. Lovely!!!
As I already wrote, I really like Jean’s books. And you succeed with great talent in expressing the content of the story. great job.
The story is lovely and your quilt has all the details in it. I particularly like the little quilt and the way the scraps are still lying on the floor. Well done.
Beautiful interpretation I like how you have placed all the elements. Bravo
Beautiful and complete transposition of the story. I like the flight of the butterfly that creates the text. Bravo!
It is so much fun to look at your quilt. You did a great job on all the elements of the story, the nine patch, the flour sacks, the scraps and the dress. What a beautiful table and I especially like how you embroidered the flight of the butterfly culminating in the text of he story. Bravo.
Charming illustration, love the story and all the small but meaningful details. Well done!
Well done I admire your attention to detail to bring this book to us in the form of a quilt. well done.
