Maryte Collard – Book #4

The Well

This is my second quilt inspired by Haruki Muracami book The Wind – Up Bird Chronicle. The well on the mysterious property takes a very important place in the book. When the main character Toru moves the lid half way, he sees that the well is dry and there is a rope ladder leading to the bottom of the well. He goes down and spends many hours sitting on the bottom of the well, thinking. While at the bottom of the well he experiences dreamlike moments where he reaches deeply into his subconsciousness trying to understand problems in his personal life and find solutions. The well becomes his escape and the place where real life intertwined with mystery.

Made of commercial and hand-dyed fabrics using fused applique technique. Machine quilted.

  1. Lovely work, the change of stitching adds depth to the piece. Very effective work, well done.

  2. I really like it, you managed to put the focus on the bottom of the well and with the ladder you are drawn into your quilt. Great quilting work. The choice of fabrics and the almost monochromatic use enhance the quilt.. Great work!

I loved that piece as soon as I saw it ! Its perspective and composition are so effective ! I like how you have suggested the construction of the well with semi stone shapes and how you have quilted a discreet text into the ladder !

  4. Wow, you have captured the moment of mystery and reality with your design and use of colour and fabrics. Bravo

Beautiful interpretation with is awesome quilt. I love your details and the composition. Just beautiful!

  6. I love the irregular shapes you used, especially the ladder. Beautiful!!

  7. You did a great job translating the cylinder shape and darkness of the well into fabric. The addition of the irregular light reflecting off some of the stones and the stitching gives perspective and depth to your composition. Well done.

  8. Beautiful work, three colors that have a lot of power to express the story

  9. You have definitely achieved a feeling of depth in your construction of the well. It is quite striking.

The depiction of the well and its opening is very mysterious and I can see that staring at it, as the character does, would be almost hypnotic. A well told and depicted story

  11. Your quilt shows the depth of the well and also reflects the deep meaning in the text you chose. Great use of colour and stitch. Very effective.

  12. A beautiful mysterious quilt with a lot of depth in it. I love the composition and all the different shapes in the stone wall. Very well done.

  13. It is amazing to me how with very few shapes you have managed to convey the well and its walls. How with one look we know that this is a well. Great depth, the colors used add to the mystery. Very striking piece!
