Kaylene Maalste – Decay #5

Inspiration came from the rust and decay on galvanised iron fences and buildings, and the growth of vines that grow on them. Materials are cotton and cotton gauze. The rust material was randomly cut and fused to background. The vines were also randomly cut, knotted and twisted then fused.

Close up view:

  1. This is lovely and a great choice of subject. The three dimension of the vines really works against the ‘harder’ back drop and the colours and fabrics are well chosen. Great work.

I love this abstract interpretation of your subject. The pieces of fabric still show the railings and vines but in a new and interesting way. I like the way that the vines have a 3D element. The background and stitching are perfect. Well done

  3. Yes, the 3d vines really looks good and supports the idea that even decay can support life. Your handstitching is always very even and nice. Lovely piece.

  4. Very free and refreshing despite the subject matter. I love the pieces of fabric you laid out in the work. The colors go great together.

  5. A great choice of colours. I like the knotted vines.

  6. A very interesting piece!
I really like the colors. The vines that you have attached on top are a nice detail.

  7. A very interesting abstract piece ! I like the addition of the 3D vines. Well done !

  8. What a lovely, colorful, abstract piece and a very nice idea to knot and twist the vines to create a 3D effect. Bravo.

  9. An interesting abstract piece with colors and fabrics well chosen. The knotted vines are a great 3D addition.

You created a beautiful colourful abstract. Your piece has so much movement. Bravo!

  11. The abstract nature of your quilt draws the viewer in for closer examination. I love your use of color and shape.

  12. You’ve created a modern and colorful interpretation of decay and your choice of colors gives your quilt a more uplifting feel. Well done.

  13. I love the absract way you’ve placed the fabrics and the knotted “vines” are very effective. This represents aa long slow process in a modern design.

  14. Very picturesque decay!
