Kaylene Maalste – Book #2

My second book is also by Pip Williams and is “The Bookbinder of Jericho”. Jericho is a UK city where the Oxford University Press Bindery is located. The main characters are twin sisters Peggy and Maude, although Peggy is the main protagonist, she and Maude work in the Bindery. Peggy would love to be a scholar but is held back by her loyalty to her twin who is mentally handicapped. To me the book is about the bond between sisters, and there is a definition in the book that comes from “The Dictionary of Lost Words”.

I have again used silk from my sister’s dress making days, appliqued the sister’s silhouette using cotton fabric and hand stitched the definition of “Sisters” -“You don’t have to be flesh and blood to be sisterly, you just have to want good for each other.”

Close up View:

  1. I don’t know about this book but the story sounds moving. I love how silhouettes of both sisters are made of the same pattern fabric but different colors. It corresponds with being different but still being bound by blood and flesh, by being sisters. I always love your hand stitching.

  2. The two beautiful silhouettes highlight the text’s stitching work and its meaning. Bravo!

This piece is really in harmony with your first one ! I agree with Maryte, it is such a good idea to have used the same fabric but with different colours for the two sisters.

  5. One can see the bond between the two sisters with your fabric choice. The colourful stitching works well and ties in with the figures. Great work, well done.

  6. The love between the two sisters is undeniable. Touching and well thought out composition. Well done.

  7. Fine work. Love how you add the letters. and I also like the silence feeling  that the work gives me.

What a lovely sentiment and you have expressed the sisterly bond with great feeling. I like the fact that the fabric is from your own sister too. Lovely work

  10. A lovely illustration of theme that shows the bond between the sisters. I am inspired to find and read the book.

  11. I love the fabrics you have used for the dresses, they both add vibrancy and movement. The embroidered text is lovely.

  12. Making the sister silhouettes out of your sister’s scraps of her dressmaking days is such a lovely idea. What a touching story. I love your beautiful, colourful hand embroidery.

  13. By using the same fabrics in different colors for the sisters, it represents the bond between them. I love the way you embroidered the words.

  14. What a wonderful story! And your sisters look like perfect definition of sisterhood 🙂
