Kaylene Maalste – Nature #5

Inspiration for this quilt was the pods of Southern Wright Whales that swim along the coast migrating to and from Antarctica. Many of the pods have mother and babies, they are a delight to see and attract many tourists during Winter. I chose the whale to contrast with the small Hooded Plover.

The materials are commercial cottons, the whales are hand appliqued. The distinguishing features are white patches on the belly of the whale and callosities (these look like barnacles) that grow on the head and jaw. The quilt is hand quilted with embroidery thread.
