Helen Hazon – Nature #5

Inspiration – the role of fungi and other microbes in natural ecosystems.

For the third pair of quilts in this Nature series I have focussed on those living things that are neither Plants nor Animals. These include fungi, bacteria, viruses and a few other types of microbes. I have chosen fungi to represent this immensely important group of organisms

My quilt takes the beautiful fairytale toadstool Amanita muscaria as its main subject. This fungus grows on decaying vegetation, usually on the edges of woodland. I have included references to the many roles of fungi in Nature and also the uses that we have developed for them in our daily lives.

The quilt is made from cotton. I have used Inktense pencils and rayon threads to add the colours.
