Greetje Hein – Decay #1

Children’s scooter

For this year’s “Decay” series, I want to use different items of transport as a theme. There will be a circle in each quilt. In the circle, the image becomes brighter, as if it is new.

A few months ago I took a picture of this children’s scooter. The scooter was rusted in a garden. It was autumn.  For this quilt I wanted to capture the autumn atmosphere.  I used commercial fabric. For the hedge, various batik fabrics have been cut into pieces.  The scooter is made extra rusty with intense pencils.  The image continues in the circle, but with bright colours.

The whole piece is free-motion quilted.

Detail view:

  1. Very interesting idea! Love autumnal melancholy contrasted with summery vibes and the better past of this poor, abandoned scooter.

  2. A surprising approach to “decay”. I love it!
The circle that is featured in all six works is a very interesting detail.
    Beautiful work.

  3. You are a genius being able able to generate such an interesting idea showing us the things “before” and “after”.The choice of items of transport for decay is also extraordinary. The execution, as always, is perfect.

  4. I agree that the idea of showing the before and after is a very clever one and adds additional interest to the piece. The overall colours imply age so really good choice. Lovely work.

I like the idea of the circles on each of your quilt, like a close up on the piece but also on your work. Bravo !

  6. Superb, your design is outstanding especially the use of the circle. Bravo

  7. Yours is a grand idea to demonstrate not only the old and rusted object, but give us a glimpse of what was in the past. The scooter looks so realistic, like it could be ridden away at any moment.

  8. The inclusion of the circle is a marvelous idea, giving us a glimpse of what the item was before it became rusted. Beautifully executed.

  9. Your choice to used the circle to show past and present its very clever. The subject is beautifully and I look forward to seeing what will be next .

  10. What a wonderful, creative idea to use a circle with the vivid colors in the total scene. I really like your choice of transport items for this series.

The cut up batik pieces for the hedge are very effective and the pieces in the circle really gives the feeling of summer.

Beautiful executed as always. I immediately fell in love with this piece.

  11. What a clever idea! The effects of decay are contrasted well with the ‘before’ circle. Great work.

What a great idea to include a little circle of ‘newness’ to emphasise the old and decaying parts. Everything has been beautifully constructed and I love the way this all works together.

  14. Wow, love the way your brain works. Great choice of fabrics, colors and excellent comparison of new and old. Well done!
