Greetje Hein – Book #6

Rock garden.

During the last Glacial, Saalien, 150.000 years ago, land ice from Scandinavia came to the area I live in now. Big rocks came with the ice to the northern and center part of the Netherlands. When the land was reclaimed from the sea a lot of these rocks were found around Schokland.

A lot of these rocks were collected at the “Rock-garden” in the Schokland forest. This is close to the museum, but not part of it. A lot of visitors come to the Rock-garden during the year.

I used a hand dyed background and punched the bushes with wool. The trees are painted with a rubbing technique. The rocks are painted on white fabric and appliqued on the background. You also see a part of the wooden poles who protected the island against the water. These are made of synthetic felt and painted vliesofix.

The whole piece is free motion quilted.
