Greetje Hein – Book #2

Book#2

“Almost home”

In the early days, before the people were evacuated, almost every man of Schokland was a fisherman.

Even young boys went out on the boats helping their dads.

At first it was a rich period of the island. After an economic depression the fishing business collapsed.

Since that time people are very poor.

The Schokker fishermen fished mainly on the Suyderzee and also on the Northsea.

The Suydersee is now mainly reclaimed land. What’s left is a big lake: IJsselmeer.

The Schokker boats were sailing boats and good to recognize: they have a straight front instead of a curved one.

At the horizon you see two of the four higher parts of the island: Emmeloord and Middelbuurt. These parts hosted the two most important harbor. The harbors were also used for other ships as a shelter when a storm was expected.

For this piece I used a hand dyed fabric, put small pieces of transparent fabric on it and covered it with organza.

The boat is threadpainted on a white piece of fabric and appliqued later.

The whole piece is quilted free motion.

  1. Your fabric choice really creates the mood of hard work and hard life under dificult circumstances. The most amazing are details of the two tiny villages on the horizon. Bravo!

  2. I can only share Marty’s opinion. The choice of fabric and this sad grey convey the feeling of poverty and hard work. Bravo!

Yes the choice of colours illustrates perfectly the difficult situation you describe. All the story about the Schokland region is very interesting, I knew nothing abour it.

By the way I love these shades of grey even if it is sad …

  5. Superb, and reflects the changing nature of land and nature. bravo

  6. The colour choice really underlines the hardships of the time. Beautiful stitching and attention to detail, well done!

  7. The monochromatic grey color palette conveys the sense of a difficult life of the hardworking fishermen. Amazing details and thread sketching. Well done.

  8. The gray color that dominates the work gives me a feeling of silencepeace. Really appreciates the view in the background, and the stitching on the boat.

  9. The colour of the quilt sets the mood of difficult times and hard work. The boat is beautifully stitched, it looks like a skutsje. Great movement in the water! The detail in the faraway villages is amazing. Bravo.

I like the way that the colours of your piece infer the hard work and hard times of the area, and hint at stormy times ahead. Your stitching adds great detail and captures the atmosphere. Lovely work

  11. The mood created by your colour scheme is a great reflection of the story you told. Several techniques used to beautifully illustrate the theme.

  12. The monotone color palette perfectly portrays the mood created by the economic depression. I like the detail on the horizon of the village in the distance.

  13. Very dramatic piece by just choosing these grey shades of color. Love how you machine-embroidered Emmeloord and Middelbuurt on the horizon. Very well done.

  14. Perfect illustration for this dark and heavy story. Love your choice of colors and simplicity of the lines, well done!
