Elsy Menko – Book #2

The Bible – the Creation – day two

On day two of the Creation the firmament was made and the waters divided, simply put; sea and sky were created. The Hebrew word for firmament is ‘raqiya’ which means the expanse or arch of the sky. It is named Heaven. The expanse of the galaxy was created in space and the earth’s atmosphere was formed. The air we breathe was likely formed and the earth was prepared for live organisms.
In children’s drawings often a half circle is used for the sky and I also liked the idea of an arch. I wondered if using only blue fabrics for sea and sky would be boring, for you to judge!
The texts used are lines from Genesis 1:7 & 8: “ … under the firmament from the waters …” and “ … called the firmament Heaven. There was evening …”.

Commercial fabrics, hand dyed fabric, fusing, couching, free motion embroidery and some hand stitching.

  1. No, it is not boring, because the sea often reflects the color of the sky. I love how you used multiple lose strips to create water. It really give interested and movement. Well done!

  2. It is true that the firmament is sometimes represented by a semicircle, which can also be seen in certain chapel windows or on some old maps. The use of blue is very appropriate and not boring. With these numerous shades of blue, you have given relief and movement to the sea. Bravo.

Beautiful interpretation and composition. Great and effective quilting in the sky. I love the words shyly popping in the sea. Bravo!

  4. Beautiful interpretation, the colours reflect our wonderful skies and water. Well done

  5. Not boring at all, the colours give depth and a little mystery to the piece. The arch works really well, not an easy subject, well done!

Not boring at all Elsy ! your choice of blues is wide enough to give interest and depth to your quilt ! I also like how you introduce the text in the waves …

  7. The monochromatic color design works perfectly, giving the sea and sky their own values while still adding movement and depth. Very clever how the words were worked in. Well done!

I can say that for me, the use of all blue is definitely not boring. I love the way that you have created the ‘sky’ as an arch to depict the translation of the words. Beautiful choice of fabrics and stitching

  9. We were educated about the story of creation in the book of Genesis. Your choice to use blue fabrics is very interesting . Love how you put the words to work.

  10. I always love blue fabrics so, not boring but appropriate to the theme of sky and sea. This is a lovely illustration of this section of genesis.

  11. Wow, this is fantastic, not boring at all. You have managed to portray the enormity of God’s creation. Beautiful work.

  12. Your use of the monochrome blue colours works really well. I love seeing how your words emerge from the strip pieced waves. Very well done.

  13. Elsy, I really love the blue colors. Just perfect. I also love how the text “disappears” into the water.

  14. Not boring but dramatic, just perfect for the subject! Love your blues and the way you created so different spaces using just one color, brilliant!
